Story

The history of the koziol company is inextricably linked to the history of the Koziol family. We have been a company since 1927, but the Koziol entrepreneurship in Erbach began in 1912.

Master potter Bernhard Josef Koziol

On March 23, 1912 Bernhard Josef Koziol moved with his small family to Erbach in the Odenwald to take over the count's art pottery. His product range included both everyday tableware and innovative, decorative items that were fired using a new process and specially mixed glazes. The entire product range also received a protected trademark.

1927

On November 27, 1927, Bernhard Koziol, son of Bernhard Josef Koziol, founded his own ivory carving business as a one-man business.
In his bedroom, he used a converted sewing machine to create delicate jewelry and miniature figurines made of ivory. This gave him a competitive advantage.

1930 – 1938

The global economic crisis of 1929 called for creativity and new manufacturing methods. Hand-carved plastic gradually replaced the expensive and rare ivory. The first plastic injection molding machine at koziol increased production many times over and made Koziol a pioneer in plastics technology.
In 1935, koziol produced jewelry from fully synthetic plastics for the first time. At the time, injection molding machines were a technical revolution and, like everything unknown, were initially viewed with suspicion.
The machines were popularly known as “Deiwelsmaschine” [Devil's machines].

1939 – 1949

During World War II, koziol manufactured jewelry that glowed in the dark and produced millions of badges for the Winter Relief Fund. At the end of 1940, the production of jewelry was finally banned; only goods essential to the war effort were allowed to be produced.
After the end of the war, plastic granulate for production was no longer available. This is where inventiveness came into play : koziol bought stocks of unused Plexiglas aircraft domes from the Röhm company in Darmstadt and used them to make bracelets and brooches.

The first dream ball in 1951

1950

It was 1950 when a man was driving through the snowy Odenwald in his VW Beetle. Suddenly he got stuck in a snowdrift. As he was maneuvering, he looked out the rear window and spotted two deer in the winter forest, the snow gently falling on them. And because the man in the car was Mr. Bernhard Koziol, this dreamily beautiful image became the world's first dream ball...

1950 – 1965

Germans are discovering travel. koziol supplies popular souvenir items such as brooches, wall plaques, removable picture frames and dream balls all over the world. The retailers' motif requests usually came in by postcard with a picture of the respective excursion destination.

Inspired by futuristic life scenarios from America, the German creativity knew no bounds. Everything seems possible: in addition to souvenirs, household items, games and even the legendary

1966 – 1979

Germany is beginning to get used to its new prosperity. The need for comfort and the joy of regained freedom are finding their way into everyday culture in the form of the party cellar. Good moods are in order: beatniks, hippies and layabouts are irritating the bourgeois society.

The 70s came with Flokati, glitter disco balls and accessories for the home bar, porcelain-look vases and meaningful sayings.

1980 – 1990

At the start of the new decade, the sons Stephan and Bernhard Koziol Jr. took over the company. They radically changed the product range and thereby appealed to a young, dynamic audience. They focused on the best of plastic, design and art.
The world's first CD shelf MANHATTAN TOWER, the crazy cool box BIG BANANA and the HERZ collection, which is still popular today, were the bestsellers at the time.

1990 - 2005

In the nineties, koziol taught the dishwashing brushes to stand upright and, in addition to Tim & Tweetie, other idiosyncratic characters quickly populated the range. The figurative products were a hit at first glance and won new fans around the world. In addition to products for the home, the product range was expanded to include lights and room dividers for professional applications.

Today

koziol is the sustainability brand . Over the past nine and a half decades, the company has reinvented itself several times with pioneering spirit and courage. Sustainability has always been and remains a core value of the brand, as since its founding, production has taken place exclusively at the company's location in Erbach/Odenwald. At koziol, the word home is much more than a feeling, it is a responsibility for people and nature.

The state-of-the-art machinery enables energy-efficient and environmentally friendly production in-house, all materials and products are certified, and all processes are regularly audited and continuously monitored.

With Daniel Koziol, the third generation arrived in 2014
